Family Sponsorship

Family reunification has long been one of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) major priority. Family class sponsorship permits family members to come to Canada as permanent residents to live, study, and work.

Family Sponsorship In Canada

Family sponsorship is a type of immigration in which Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor relatives for permanent residence in Canada.

Unlike other immigration streams, relatives are not subject to any screening criteria. The Family Class Sponsorship Program helps family members reconnect and settle in Canada.

Which Relatives Are Eligible For Sponsorship?

The following is a partial list of family members that are eligible for sponsorship:

  • Common-law partners, spouses or conjugal partners who are above 18 years of age
  • Parents and dependent children
  • Adopted children, children under the sponsor’s care, and children being considered for adoption (under the age of 18).
  • Grandparents
  • Sisters, brothers, nephews, nieces,
  • Grandchildren and grandchildren who are orphaned and under the age of 18 (unmarried and not in a common-law relationship)

Duties And Responsibilities Of Sponsors

Sponsoring is a legal duty and obligation, thus sponsors must fulfill the income selection requirements outlined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Sponsors must be Canadian permanent residents or citizens above the age of eighteen (18). Family Sponsorship Canada provides the opportunity to bring a loved one to Canada.

If they are already residing outside of Canada, they must demonstrate that they will relocate to Canada if the sponsored relative is authorized.

The individual wanting to be a sponsor may not declare bankruptcy and should not be charged with any criminal activity.

Any sponsor should promise to assist the sponsored relative for a period of three to twenty years after the sponsored relative arrives in Canada.
